Laughlin Air Force Base Trailblazes Environmental Sustainability – First Military Base to Adopt NDRS
Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, Texas has recently partnered with nonprofit Green Education Foundation to become the first military base to install an on-site Neighborhood Donation Recycling Station (NDRS) in an effort to increase textile recycling and reduce overall waste. This will allow Airmen and their family members to recycle shoes, clothes, and many other household items directly at the base. Unlike thrift stores which throw away most items that don’t sell and eventually end up in landfills, all items donated to NDRSs are either sold at low-cost markets or recycled into new reusable materials thanks to Green Education Foundations closed loop recycling system! Neighborhood donation recycling stations are a great way to reduce waste and recycle materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. By diverting usable items from landfills, NDRS help to conserve materials and prevent pollution. Furthermore, recycling helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as it takes less energy to recycle materials than it does to produce new materials.
